-----------------------------------------------------

Atop a rocky cliff, where the shore meets the sea, there she stood unmoved.

As she gazed out upon the waters below her, she could see the edge of the shoreline. Here was a place where small rocks and shells had been tossed up and left to sit. They sat there much as she just waiting to be noticed, waiting to be cared for. The waters shown a clear aqua blue and as the girl stood with her eyes closed she could hear the sounds of the calm waves as they collapsed exhausted from their trip across the lake.

A group of seagulls flew lazily above the cliff and made small screeching noises as they each dipped and rose to match the wind patterns. The lake smelt deeply of fish today for it was late summer and the fishermen had already begun their harvest. The air tossed in a strong breeze a sign of a well predicted storm and the ending of another season. The air grew crisper each day and it had become too cold to swim or to even stand among the water.

A large wave crashed against the side of the hill sending tremors up the rocks and to the girls feet. However she did not stir even as the cold mist broke against her face. Instead she took it all in every little detail, each moment giving her strength and she felt like she were living.

Opening her eyes she calmly watched as the shore began to empty. The clouds in the sky were growing darker and she knew that soon it would be time to head in. Still she stood their waiting, studying the world as the minutes slowly passed by.

Soon thunder rang in the distance. The seagulls disappeared in a flurry of white feathers going off to their shelters and hiding away from what was to come. A few brave birds remained behind flying high in the sky daring the wind and the storm to stop them from getting their meals.

For a moment the girl felt like one of them as she felt the courage ride within her. As the thunder crashed in the sky above her she shouted aloud and shook her fists feeling a sense of freedom that only comes from fearlessness. Then as the skies broke apart letting a million drops of water fall down below all around her the world seemed to be screaming with her.

The few remaining gulls broke out in a chorus of screeches as they flew this way and that dancing in the wind and shaking the water from their wings. Darkness began to engulf the world as the clouds grew into large formations of grey and black.

The girl called out once more in the midst of the thunder and her voice echoed against the empty rocks about her. The waves grew more rough and with each wave her voice grew louder growing into a large soprano shriek even as rain plummeted down her face and into her open mouth.

The waves called back in their deep undertones as they grew in size and ferocity. Still she stood unhindered by their cries. The wind swirled around her shaking her and causing her to tremble. However not even that could cause her to fall. Strong she stood there daring the waves to pull her down with them.

Time continued to pass. Slowly peace began to settle in once more. The storm lay in defeat as it passed on to test other lands with its power. She gazed out over the waters below her feeling the mist settle against her soaked form. The world fell to silence frozen as all returned to the way it was in the beginning.
