It's okay purplechip03114, I think you get the point. You're right, a lot of needy people would benefit from free health care. The idea is so unpopular mainly because plugging health care into the government system would cause income taxes rates to increase.

Man, I just don't understand why so many people want government healthcare. It doesn't benifit the people any way, but some of my liberal friends always say: "Well, it will help everyone who can't afford it." I told them to look in the inbetween the lines, deeper into it, and they just blew me off. No offense to whom are far-left liberals here, but why don't they even listen to Republicans?

The answer to both: Republicans are stupid.
Just kidding!!! :-P This isn't a right-vs-left/black-and-white argument, this is a human rights argument. And believe it or not, some liberals don't believe in universal healthcare, and some republicans do. (And there are a LOT of stupid people on both sides of the spectrum.)

I can definitely understand why you would think it's a bad idea... but you also have to think how it would benefit in the long run. I'll even make it have purty colors for ya! Okay... here I go...

1) The Less fortunate would get it. Yes I know exactly what your thinking, "They didn't earn the money to be able to afford it so why should they get it?" Or something along those lines. Well for one, you can't assume all poor people are poor because they're lazy and unmotivated. You don't know their situation. But if you still don't care you have to think about the whole picture. They may not have the right to have universal Health care what with their no desire to make it to the top of the food chain... but why should we make the their children suffer? They can't help the fact that their parents are lazy bums. If you don't think the poor adults are deserving of the free Health Care... then think about the poor children (I know how ridiculous that sounds...). They deserve something. Without Universal healthcare, the majority of those kids' ailments tend to go uncared for. I mean unless it's a severe emergency... (ex: car accident) and doctors are obligated to take care of them.
2)Now for the Quality over quantity issue. Not everyone would have to be required to have the same exact insurance policy or whatever. The people who can afford better quality Healthcare most definitely deserve it. So while we do give out free healthcare to everyone, those with more money shall get the better treatment. There the answer to your whole Qualtiy over quantity.
but you haven't overcome one little factor: how are we suppose to do it? individual states have tried to develop a universal healthcare system but it wasn't successful. I don't see how we can afford to give every single person in the country healthcare. This includes illegal immagrants that come here either with an illness (many illegal immigrants come here with tiberculoses ) or they come and get hurt in e.g. a car crash. They do not have healthcare and we would all have to pay for them. That's one thing Canada
doesn't have....millions of illegals crossing the border

There is a very simple way to give health care to only U.S. Citizens and it's a system that we already have in place: Social Security.

Say you break your left arm and you go to the Hospital for treatment. You hand them your SS card and they type the SSN into a computer, at witch point a photo and your information pops up and they verify that you are you, and you then you get your care.

This would work better than using a Birth Certificate because a Social Security number cannot be forged. And if people don't want their SSN floating around, the government could issue people a sort of second SSN. It would work the same way, but not be tied to Social Security, just citizenship.

Just because the Universal Health Care quality in SWEDEN is perhaps sub-par, that does not mean that the care HERE would have to be crappy. In Minnesota where I live, we have lots of great Hospitals and Clinics. For example, The Mayo Clinic is consistently rated ont of the best Health Care institutions in the US, as is the U of M in Minneapolis and CentraCare in St. Cloud.

Plus, Obama's plan includes a public option, meaning that you could use the Government's plan, or stick with your current provider (such as Blue Cross Blue Shield [which sucks IMHO]).
